“When has anyone ever cared what I wanted?”

This question illustrated the cruel motif of Zarifa’s old life. Married to a disabled man whose family constantly targeted Zarifa with violence, Zarifa lost her two children and one unborn baby from her new family.

Traveling from her married home to a neighbor’s supposed safe haven, she found herself in a new form of slavery. Zarifa escaped one day when she realized no one was around to stop her “and never looked back.”

Through wandering, she heard about the Human Rights Commission and their shelter. Ashamed and full of self-hate, Zarifa couldn’t talk to anyone. Then one day, a girl who experienced things just like Zarifa provided hope for a better future. Soon after, Zarifa got a job and began healing.
